If you look at the side wall of your car tyres, you will find markings that provide a technical description of your tyre. We have provided a brief explanation of these markings below and further guidance can be found in the following tyre fact pages.
Tyre Sizes
Tyre sizes are made up of a number of different numbers and letters. For example tyre size 195/75 R 14 92 T is made up of the following information:
195 | The tyre width in millimetres |
75 | The aspect ratio (the height of the sidewall divided by the tyre width) |
R | Identifies the tyre construction type – in this case R is for radial |
14 | The diameter of the rim in inches |
92 | Load Index (the maximum weight loading at maximum tyre speed) |
T | Speed Rating (letter indicating the maximum speed for which the tyre is intended) |
Tyre Age – A three digit age code on the sidewall indicating the month and year of manufacture. For example 129 means the tyre was manufactured in December 1999.
Other Markings
M&S – Identifies if a tyre is specifically designed for use in Mud and Snow
DOT Codes – Coding satisfying the requirements of the US Department of Transportation contain a mixture of letters and numbers such as DOT DVDE MTA 129
E-Marks – Tyres for sale in the European Community must carry an E -Mark in accordance with ECE Reg 30 – E.g. E4 027550
